The Outdoor Checklist
Start outside. The majority of pest entry points and harbouring sites are in the exterior of the property.
- Clear leaf litter, garden debris, and mulch that has built up against the base of the house over winter — this material provides ideal nesting conditions for ants, cockroaches, and rodents
- Trim trees, shrubs, and garden plants so they are not in contact with the building — overhanging branches are a direct access route for roof rats and can trap moisture against the structure
- Clean out gutters and downpipes — blocked gutters create standing water that attracts mosquitoes and provides moisture that supports termite activity along fascias and roof timbers
- Inspect timber structures — fences, decking, garden sleepers, and pergolas — for any signs of termite mud leads, hollow-sounding sections, or damage. Arrange a termite inspection if you have not had one in the last twelve months
- Check eaves, roof vents, and any gaps where pipes or cables enter the building — seal anything large enough for a mouse (approximately 6mm or larger) before nesting birds and rodents claim these spaces for spring
- Look for early wasp activity around eaves, window frames, retaining walls, and under outdoor furniture — a small nest caught in September is a ten-minute job; the same nest in November can be a significant hazard
- Move compost bins and firewood storage away from the building perimeter — both attract ants, cockroaches, and rodents, and the closer they are to the house, the shorter the path inside
The Indoor Checklist
Once the exterior is covered, work through the inside of the property — focusing on the areas where pest activity is most likely to establish.
- Deep-clean behind and under appliances — refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, and washing machines collect food residue and grease that cockroaches feed on. Pull them out and clean properly at the start of each season
- Inspect the pantry — check for any packaging that has been chewed, droppings near the back of shelves, or moths in dry goods. Decant bulk items like rice, flour, and cereals into sealed containers
- Check under sinks and around pipe entry points in kitchens and bathrooms — gaps around plumbing are one of the most common indoor entry points for cockroaches and rodents. Seal with expanding foam or a silicone sealant
- Access the roof space if possible and check for rodent droppings, nesting material, or gnaw marks on insulation and cabling — winter is when rodent activity in roof voids peaks, and spring is when populations that established over winter can expand rapidly
- Inspect subfloor areas if applicable — look for moisture, mud leads on piers or stumps (a key indicator of termite activity), and any pooling water that has not dried over winter
- Check window and door seals, flyscreens, and weather strips — damaged seals are entry points for flies, mosquitoes, and cockroaches. Replace anything that is split, missing, or not sealing correctly
